The definition of Boutique Bolgheri, Le Macchiole – among the pioneering producers in what has become among the most renowned winegrowing regions in the world – is owned and run by Cinzia Merli and her sons Mattia and Elio Campolmi. The focus of Cinzia and her team is allowing the terroir of Bolgheri to express itself fully in their wines, which now more than ever display great elegance and refinement in addition to the power for which the wines from the region are known. Le Macchiole is perhaps best known for its single-variety wines, including the 100% Cabernet Franc cult classic Paleo.

Petrolo is the definition of a cult winery, with an owner and a story that have helped create its legendary status. While the estate’s benchmark wine, the Merlot cru Galatrona, deservedly receives fireworks in the press and is part of the history of Tuscany’s quality revolution in the late 1980s and 1990s, the winery’s two other standouts, Torrione and Boggina, are an equally thrilling success – Sangiovese from a special and virtually unknown appellation bordering Chianti Classico that today produces wines of distinct regional identity.

Scacciadiavoli, nestled in the Umbrian hills between Foligno and Todi, has long been synonymous with great wine production in Montefalco. Four generations ago, the winery was purchased by the Pambuffetti family from the original owners, the Boncompagni Ludovisi family, members of the Roman nobility. It was Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi who recognized the property’s winemaking potential and designed and constructed a winery in 1881 that quickly gained notoriety as one of the finest in Umbria. Since 1954, the Pambuffetti family has continued to produce wines that reflect the history, quality, and values for which Scacciadiavoli has always been known.

Located in Irpinia, the lesser-known part of Campania that is decidedly more continental than the more famous Amalfi coast, Villa Raiano specializes in producing crus of the classic varieties of the region: Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, and Aglianico. The winery’s vineyards see average temperatures that are colder than those of Alto Adige, leading to the creation of wines with impressive acidity and brightness that nonetheless retain the power and body typical of wines from Campania, while at the same time exhibiting great elegance and drinkability.
